Petrified Wood?

Found this on a red clay mound near my house, newly developed area, so may have been dug up during excavation works.

That looks like some stones I got from Australia ,a red clay opal bearing rock.

The clay may be what this stone becomes when weathered. It's not wood though, I'm afraid. The colors appear to be different oxidation states of iron.

Limonite I think. Very pretty!
