ElleWoods111
Does anyone know what this is? I found this while beach walking in the San Diego-area. It's about 3" across.
Lone Hunter
Since no one else is available I'm going to take a guess at dolphin vert.
val horn
Nice vertebrae. Is it a fossil, did it pass a burn test?

ElleWoods111
Hi all- thanks for the quick replies. I'm a novice so a few question here: 1) how do you determine if it's recent vs. not / a fossil? 2) what part should I 'burn' to test if it's indeed a fossil? 3) how did you deduce it's a dolphin or. mammal (or something else)? HemiHunter
Modern dolphin or whale vert, to my eyes. If you try burning a modern bone, it will smell nasty. Mineralized bone won't smell.
