Found in the Peace River, Florida. Unfortunately root is missing. Fairly robust size, curved, one side appears to have a mesial ridge. I am hoping it is dire wolf. What do you think?

It does look very much like the second tooth in that picture—upper canine Tremarctos floridanus. My theory that it was dire wolf was based on info from page 264 of “A Beachcomber’s Guide to Fossils”. One of the authors, Ashby Gale, is a paleontologist, so I was hopeful it was a reliable resource.  If it is bear, it would be the only bear fossil I have found in 8 years of fossiling on Peace River—pretty exciting!!!

Your tooth is 40 mm for the tip.  Here is one of my finds at 68 mm for the whole tooth.

The size of this tooth is pretty large so I accept it is probably bear. Even though it looks nothing like Shellseeker’s picture, the size is comparable and it does look like the 2nd tooth in Harry Pristis picture.  Do you know how big dire wolf canines are? I have a couple other teeth I may want to reconsider my ID. The internet is not helpful—I am attaching a picture of a tooth almost exactly same size and appearance as mine that sold on the internet  as dire wolf. I appreciate your expertise.
