Purisima Formation At Capitola Ca.

The first one is just one from Bobbys stomping grounds, Capitola beach. The others are from the same beach also. It almost looks like a tip of a tusk and the measurements of the end are ~ 1" x 3/4". It is starting to crack so I was thinking of using some PVA on it.

It's been a long time since I went looking for fossils since there aren't too many around me. I had an opportunity to go to Santa Cruz and stopped by Capitola to see what the Purisima offered.

Thanks for any opinions

Hey Kevin,

Sorry, that looks like a phosphate nodule. There are hundreds of phosphate nodules for every bone there, and I can count on one hand the number of tusks that have been collected from the Purisima Formation.

The cross section of the nodule shows the typical matrix of phosphate nodules, as well as the dark outer portion.

Thanks Bobby. Now I don't feel so bad about some pieces falling out of it.

It looks pretty nice anyway. I'll post up some other pictures I took of some of the bones that were exposed on slabs out on the beach. I think there will be six more from the trip.

Here are the ones which were embedded into the rock, I am assuming they are bone because of the porosity and one of the pieces was protruding from the rock and starting to weather away.
