galaxy777
Hello, I found this bison skull in a creek yesterday after a very heavy rain (that downed many trees in a few areas). Positive it's bison, but not sure if it is a young bison bison, or possibly a bison antiquus calf? The horns from tip to tip are 20 1/2" and the length of the skull is around 19 1/2" There are 3 upper cheek teeth present, the back 2 worn down considerably. Any help would be much appreciated!
Harry Pristis
This is an OLD bovid, notable for the advanced tooth wear. Your tip-to-tip measure is only 520 mm. It's a cow. Harry Pristis
I don't know how reliable your source is. galaxy777
There are many skeletal anatomy documents showing the premaxilla bone ends abruptly before the nasal plate on Bison. The premaxilla bone on a Bos extends up to and most of the time touches the nasal plate. JohnJ
The tooth wear indicates an older animal as @Harry Pristis mentioned. It's possible it was an older female. The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ
