Central Arkansas possible fossil

A friend asked me if this might be a fossil. I don’t know but I do know where to ask!

The piece is heavy and will just barely take a scratch from a high-carbon steel pick.

Thanks in advance!

I think this is a concretion. I've seen similar shapes that had a stacked appearance near sites where plant fossils are common (coal shales). It seems like I've seen conjecture that they may be associated with root traces, but I'm not sure if the idea has been well developed, or if I may be imagining it.

Sounds very likely. If it were plant or bone, would there be any organized interior structure or would, as here, it have the “normal” appearance of fractured rock?

It has the potential to have organized structure if they are actually created by an animal or plant. If I remember right I never personally found anything that I thought to be like other trace, or body fossils though.
