Is it an egg?  No.

Any thoughts on what it might be/have been?

I looked that up and couldn’t find any photos that looked similar. Can you send something that might look like that?

It looks like a concretion.  The very center object is very likely a fossil of some tiny bit of biological material.

Imagine, yes, send, no.

The answer is likely given above.

@TqB

Looks cooler that way haha. Any thoughts from you? We thought the then white around the edges was shell. But not much experience at all on our end.

Got it ok. Thanks! We just thought because of the thin white border it looked like a shell. The photos that Fossildude19 posted on this thread show it better.

Well it does look rather sponge-like, to me, but I am not an expert on sponges.

Could be a concretion, but it lacks concentric layers.

It also lacks egg-shell texture.

It looks like Inyo county has lots of Cambrian aged strata around (much too old for eggs) and lots of invertebrate fossils.

There are some areas of Triassic outcroppings, but you would have to check the linked website to see what looks closest to where you found this item.

This may be a good website for you to peruse.
