Not sure what this is...

Hello,  I'm new. This was found in Central Louisiana, in a rock/dirt pit. Between 30-40 ft. deep. Other fossils were found in the same area. It was under a thick (around 10 ft.) layer of reddit. Please be patient with me. I'm new, but have found some great fossils from this new dig. thanks

Welcome to the Forum.  :)

This doesn't look like any fossil I am familiar with.   :headscratch:

This looks like agate or chert to me.

Maybe some others will weigh in?

Yup. The shiny surface that is evident in the photos indicates it may be a high-silica cherty material. Really interesting erosional patterning on the outside and the inside seems to have a bit of worn botryoidal (cluster of grapes) shape to it which can form on the inside of a hollow (geode-like) rock. Looks to be purely geological but a pretty piece that I'd have picked up to have a closer look (and probably have kept despite it not being a fossil).

Welcome to the forum. Looking forward to seeing what other rocks and fossils you have found in your area.

Cheers.

I just love autocorrect! As I understand it, Reddit can get pretty thick at times.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Chalcedony is another possibility. Botryoidal quartz at any rate. Just out of curiosity: What the heck is reddit supposed to be? All I can come up with on google is the well-known website.

I think she meant “red dirt”, but autocorrect (or fingers that were too quick) came up with reddit. That’s my guess anyway.

Auto-correct can make for some interesting misinterpretations.

Any additional insights on the rock in question are moot as the OP was last here on the forum almost 2 years ago. She (hopefully) got the answers she was seeking but did not stay to become a long-term (addicted) fossil hunter. ;)

Cheers.

Reddit is another forum-like site except it can be for anything. You name an interest, it’s there as a sub-forum (known as sub-reddits) on the site. The problem is that the site is largely unmoderated unless you take care to moderate your own sub-reddit. People are very toxic and unkind there and barring occasional moderation you can also post whatever content you want :shakehead:

I won’t say everything on that site is bad, but much of it makes it hard to navigate for those unprepared for the risks…

I'm not at all interested in that website. I just wanted to know what the OP was trying to say and it looks like FossilNerd came up with the logical answer.
