TomIslay
Hi, I work at the nature centre on the Isle of Islay. We had a school visit today and a little girl brought in the rock/fossil pictured. She found it on a pebble beach near Bowmore on the Isle of Islay. I had a quick look at our fossil books and couldn't identify it. Apologies for lack of scale, is about 10cm long. Any help much appreciated. Thanks
Fossildude19
This looks like a belemnite phragmocone, to me. There is also the possibility of wood (jet) or some other plant material. Maybe someone more familiar with the area can chime in? @Tidgy's Dad @TqB 1 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Many thanks for your response, I'm sure she will be delighted to find out she's found some ancient squid. Though I will wait to see if anyone has others ideas before I contact the school. Fossildude19
Cropped, enlarged, and brightened: On closer inspection, this could just be a mineral vein/inclusion. Any coal found in the area? 2 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Tidgy's Dad
I think the Isle of Islay is metamorphic or igneous and mostly Precambrian. Stromatolites are famous there. So maybe a mineral. Vein of schorl (tourmaline), perhaps? 1 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
TqB
I agree it has to be something mineralogical. 1 Tarquin
TomIslay
Thanks all, the geology of Islay is amazingly complex. However I don't believe there is any coal present on the island.
