fifbrindacier
Hi everybody. This year i decided to try new sites to find trilobites. I firstly decided to try a site in the Pyrénées, maybe those who love cyclism and the Tour de France will have heard about the Col d'Aspin and Col du Tourmalet. At the Col d'Aspin, altitude 1489 meters, the landscape is fantastic, green with great trees. The landscape is fantastic, but the trilos didn't show up. Maybe the next time will i be more successful. The only fossil i found is that tiny item, less than a centimeter at the widest. So we decided to head up here, at the observatory of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre : At the foot of that Pic lies the ski station of La Mongie and, above the station, the Col du Tourmalet. There was no fossil to find here, only little cristallizations And an unexpected herd of Llamas The point of view is great Edited June 4, 2021 by fifbrindacier 4 "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." fifbrindacier
From the observatory, 2877 meters, it's just wonderful ! From here can be seen the breach of Rolland. It is the place where the nephew of Charlemagne, Rolland de Roncevaux, broke the mountain with his sword Durendal, according to the legend (do you spot the gap on the cliff at the middle right of the photo ?) I did go there, at the tip of that footbridge, with the emptiness visible under my feet and goodness knows how much i'm scared by emptiness under my feet Joyfully the glass wasn't too much transparent This observatory is the first in the world to have been built at a so hight altitude. It was firstly a meteorologic station (the following four images are from internet : le blog des pyrénées, promenade.imcce.fr, hal.inria.fr, docplayer.fr) Two years were needed to bring the furniture up, the first meters with donkeys and mules but in the last slopes, only men could do that work. The scientists stayed there for months without the assurance to be supplied because of the altitude and mostly the meteo conditions : temperatures between 30° and 40° Celsius below zero and winds of about 300 hundred kilometers by hour. An atlas of the moon was made here in the sixties. More than 60 000 photos were necessary to map our satellite and used by the Nasa to determine were the mission Appollo 11 could land. This dome has been financed by the Nasa to take the photos. During about ten years, each days a hundred of photos of the moon were taken from here. They were brang down by the cable car, the american army took them to an airport and then to Saint-Louis in the South of the USA. We had the head turned towards the sky and the stunning landscape. FossilNerd
I wish you had found a bucket of trilobites, but what a wonderful consolation prize! That view is spectacular Sophie! Coco
A few years ago I went up to the Rolland Breach. It is quite windy ! I had already been there in the 90s, there was still the small glacier under the breach but it no longer exists... Thank you for this report, I love the mountain. Next time you will have more luck with the trilobites. So unless my Jean-Baptiste isn't well we should find things. "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." fifbrindacier
Today we went in Brittany on a site were the layers are Ordovician with two brothers. The weather was very hot si we stopped soon. Jean-Baptiste found it was too hot to dig, so he walked all around the site to see if yhere was something worth to take amont all the loose stones, but this site isn't a very rich one and a lot of people know where it is. This said the Trilos began to show up, mostly Neseuretus. Here are our best finds. 5 6 "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." If that refreshes during those hot days, that's a very nice sensation. Edited June 10, 2021 by fifbrindacier 1 "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." fifbrindacier
For our last day in Brittany we sent to GrandFougeray, but we didn't find the layer. So we sent to the center of that village and found out that Bertrand Duguesclin, a hero of the Hundred years War because he had pushed the Englishs out of Brittany had a Castle here. Then we sent to La Hunaudiere, were we collected a few nodules in a field. 5 "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." A lot of them were given to me because i made an exchange with trilos i found in the Pyrénées, like for example the cephalon of uralichas, the trinucleids, the two cephalons of Eccoptochile and some of the Colpocoryphe rouaulti from Bain de Bretagne, Guichen or Traveusot, where i didn't go. I found a lot of Asaphids and Eodalmanitidae that are not in photo because i must prep them a little. But, yes, that was a great day ! Woaw, so much trilos in a so little area !
