I found this in Black Hawk County Iowa. It is approx. 9cm x 11cm x 3cm. My guesses are always wrong even when (or especially when) I use Google images so I'm looking forward to being in the right spot for help. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum.  :)

I'm not really seeing any fossil here, unfortunately.

Looks more like weathered/eroded chert, to me.

Welcome!

Don't be discouraged, but I also don't see a fossil.  I agree that it looks like a piece of weathered chert.  Keep looking though!

Of course i would have liked to hear that it's a fossil. Who doesn't want a fossil? :-) I just appreciate the help w/ identification. Every little bit helps when it comes to trying to learn.
