RebeccaW2021
Hi everyone!!! Just having a tough time identifying whether this is fossilized wood or a fragment of tusk. It feels weighty, and doesn't feel like a regular stick of wood if that makes sense. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thank you! I should mention it was found along an estuary, and was part buried and part exposed so likely once buried and the tide had exposed it Edited June 10, 2021 by RebeccaW2021
Coco
Keep in mind that in order to provide identification, we need to know the place of origin and size Coco 1 ---------------------- OUTIL POUR MESURER VOS FOSSILES : ici Ma bibliothèque PDF 1 (Poissons et sélaciens récents & fossiles) : ici Ma bibliothèque PDF 2 (Animaux vivants - sans poissons ni sélaciens) : ici Mâchoires sélaciennes récentes : ici Hétérodontiques et sélaciens : ici Oeufs sélaciens récents : ici Otolithes de poissons récents ! ici Un Greg... Tusk is ivory has Schreger lines. There are no indication of Schreger lines in any of your photos. Fossilized wood is rarer than fossil bone which is rarer than modern wood. Which ever is the base material, there is some sort of whitish encrustation that I do not recognize. I believe that the most likely base material is bone. Rockwood
I agree that this is fossil bone. I'm thinking the odd features may be more of an infestation than encrustation though. Perhaps burrowing when the piece was fresh, or maybe root damage at some subsequent time.
