I am unable to identify these pieces from my grandad's collection. He is now unable to clearly see and so sadly couldn't identify it. It must be something, he was a zoologist and the shale meant enough to have a crack repaired. Parts look like bones to me. I'd love to get these identified so I can prep them, making them clearer so he can see them clearer 1649006467_PXL_20210611_1709406095.thumb.jpg.15bc720d8ae72a1c4e46bc7d0b03239c.jpgagain.

Any idea where these came from?

The first item looks like bits of plant material, to me.    :headscratch:

These are likely from somerset, the first looks consistent with that idea. I'm not sure how that effects chances of it being plant material, but I don't think those marine fossil deposits would contain terrestrial plants, which led me to think fish bones as opposed to plant stems, but I don't know

I regularly find plant fossils in marine sediments of the Devonian of New York.

Fair enough, I'll look into that possibility, thanks for the response

As already said, no problem to find terrestrial plants together with marine fossils. Not in all marine strata, but in quite many.
