What kind of bone is this? I found it in a river.

I went fossil hunting today in a river and found this bone. I don't know if it is a fossil or just old bone. Can anyone help me identify it?

Without the ends it is tough to be certain, but a good bet is that it is a metacarpal from a modern deer.

That's what we were thinking! I'm just glad it isn't human. My son was so excited and wanted to keep it, and I said, "Only if we know for sure it's not human!" :heartylaugh:

I'm quite sure it is actually two bones that are naturally fused together in this group of animals. Humans have quite different and differentiated hand and foot bones. The other long bones of humans seem safely out of contention as well. You should disinfect it somehow. There is no telling what kind of cooties might be on it. :)
