I found this while digging in my garden. Could someone help me and let me know if they can identify it. It looks like a three toed something possibly.  This was the only green colored “rock” around.  What do you think??

I thought so too at first but with all the other pieces I found with this item and none other look like a shell. Possibly a turtle shell...

Not seeing any characteristics of turtle shell, hopefully someone can be of more assistance.

I don't know what this is. Green and I don't always see eye to eye (color blind).

I'm pretty sure it's not a frog or turtle though.

And that’s where I’m at with it. I don’t know what it is. Definitely localized color of green. And the one does look like possible part of a shell from ocean.  But the texture also. Very smooth on top with rough underside

Sorry. I hate to keep throwing out negative, but I'm fairly sure this is just a pretty mineral and not a fossil.

Can you scratch glossy, greenish parts it with a nail?

Some kind of quartz is indeed a possibility, but to me it also looks like some kind of serpentinite.

Does serpentinite occur in your area? Try googling for it.

I'm tending to agree with the others that this is a mineralogical specimen, probably quartz with other stoney material, rather than a fossil, although even when I enlarge the photos of the "shell", the details aren't sharp enough for me to be able to judge properly. The green color, which is also not easy to recognize in the photos, could be caused by either plant or mineral impurities.

PS. I could also go along with Franz' interpretation as a possibility.

It would really help to know your general location within Virginia. Virginia is a huge state, geologically, and location will help us narrow down the options fairly quickly.
