3d simulation of extinct biomes

Recommended Posts

I'm currently working on a simulation of extinct biomes, i'm slowly learning how to make everything as realistic as possible for realtime 3d simulation.
I would like to start  with plants recreated from some Silurian, lower devonian and upper devonian, and slowly working to recreating the biomes in the areas where they lived and later i'l like to add animals aswell. All my research is made with google i'm not a professional in archeology or 3d art, some of the models are very simple and unpolished for now and will be updated.

The project is in the early stages for now but it runs very well on most pc's

A lower devonian enviroment with small plants like Asteroxylon, Nothia, Rhynia and Ventarura, these and few other are part of the Rhinie chert (found near the village of Rhynie, Scotland)

Sketchfab has increased the upload limit from 1 to 10 models every month, i can share my updates with 3d models better than uploading images

Asteroxylon: This is a high polygon model of a plant from the lower devonian period, it's not suited for a realtime simulation, it will have to be converted into a lower polygon model to work.

A render made with Unreal Engine

I updated a tree from my first post, i had to increase the polygon count to 20k to ad all the details on the trunk

Archeopteris is an extinct genus of progymnosperm tree with fern-like leaves, it reached heights of 24m and populated most of the planet from the Upper Devonian to Lower Carboniferous (383 to 323 million years ago)

Very good! I almost want to print a couple of these out to accompany fossils in my collection.

i'm glad you like them, the models are not realy finished, most they still untextured and there are alot of improvements to be made but feel free to use them.

ftlcgi-

What software are you using?  3ds Max, Blender, other?  I've been in the 3d game a long time so if you ever need any help just let me know.   I'm very fluent with Autodesk products but have used most others.  Very nice project and look forward to seeing the end product!

hi Nchapman, i've been using Speedtree to make the plants and Unreal engine for the renders and i'm working on some animals right now with Maya, Mudbox (yes... i know it's absolete), Headus UVLayout, Topogun and Photoshop. I've been taking a long break from this stuff and skills feel a bit rusty

This is a trilobite from the order Proetida, i made a few years ago, for now it's a bit to large in detais for my project and not animated for now, below is in the Unreal Engine with some generic sponges and crinoids

Dunkleosteus, the model is based on the skull fossil and other recreations, it still needs some improvements to get a realistic look

Hallipterus is one of the few Eurypterids that were making a living in the seas dominated by placoderms in the Late Devonian. The model is not yet completed it still has some anatomical issues but it's ok for a render

Will you animate the creatures as well or are they going to stay as models?

i definitely will animate them, That's what i'm working on now: Dunkleosteus is now rigged and animated but when i export it to unreal engine it just looks like it's twitching to death,

and currently i'm working on some animated spiders for the Rhynie Chert scene.

UE4 Will alow me to give them some basic AI, like avoiding obstacles or hunting each other, etc.

I'm glad you like my work, i love working on this project.

here is an animation test of the Dunkelosteus in Maya, i left out the twitching and dying part

I laughed so hard when I heard the jaws music playing.

Keep up the nice work!

I made more plants and uploaded them to sketchfab.

Old models got some updates and different plant variations (young plants, deat trunks etc)

Hyenia elegans (Europe, middle Devonian)

Rellimia (Europe, middle Devonian)

Lorophyton (Europe, middle Devonian)

Serrulacaulis (Europe, Late Devonian)

Rhacophyton (US, Late Devonian)

Barinophyton (US, Late Devonian)

Otzinachsonia (US, Late Devonian)

Valmeyerodendron (US, Late Devonian)

Thrinkophyton - (China, Lower Devonian)

Foozia minuta - (China, Lower Devonian)

I made a simple version of the interface of the program or the main menu, the final version will have a slider on the left with a time scale and the Earth on the right, the user will slide it up or down in the geologic periods, and when a stage it's clicked, the earth will update the position of the continents.

Like a Google earth, where you click on a marker and u can see a photo, there will be markers visible where the user can click and load an simulation thet can be played like a game

I made some examples, using as refference the Scotese Paleomaps, but i made my own version with realistic textures, clouds, higher resolution, i uploaded the maps to sketchfab, it's just mockup to allow me to work on the technical parts. On the final version the interface will be customizable with different layers to show boundries, disable clouds etc.

Earth in the Pragian stage (Lower devonian)

Giventian stage (upper devonian)

That looks really great.

I do easily get uninterested if it looks to much cgi, but you are getting to a point where it looks enough like nature to catch my attention.

Looking forward to where this goes!

That's my goal, to make it look as much naturaly realistic as i can, i don't want to waste time on artistic details yet.

Most beginners like to ad a ton of lens flare, motion blur etc. to hide flaws

I added some features to the eurypterid

- Basic animations like idle swiming, fast swiming, attack. This is the first animated character i ever made so it's not perfect

- AI that controls other creatures, right now they just roam randomly, but Unreal Engine allows me to make it way more complex interactions like hunting pray, run from predator etc.

- Character controller, it lets me play as the eurypterid, it's just for testing animations and it's realy fun to play as one of these animals. I'm not realy planning to make a game out of this just now, we'll se where this goes.

I uploaded a screen capture here: https://youtu.be/WM85tOGYKMo (no fancy graphics, it's played on my laptop)
