Associated Camptosaurus bones from Morisson Fm

Hi

I am currently preparing a bunch of associated bones from Morisson Formation. The fossils have been found near the town Shell.

The finder identified the bones as Camptosaurus and I agree with the ID. The jacket contains two femuri, ribs, parts of hip bones as well as a phalanx. It seems that all bones belong to the same animal. However, I am not convinced regarding the phalanx. I think it may not belong to this individual (or Camptosaurus). The campto digits I saw so far looked quite a bit different. If it is not Campto what is it then?

Below please find some pictures of the jacked and one partially prepared femur and the phalanx.

Size femur: 48cm / 19inch

Size phalanx: 10cm / 4inch

The pedal phalanx is definitely not Camptosaurus, they are short and more box shaped.  Looks like its from an indeterminate theropod phalanx 1 possibly digit II

Thank you for confirming that the phalanx is not Camptosaurus. I will look at theropod digits to see if I can narrow it down some more (most likely not possible since I cannot find a lot of illustrations and my phalanx is a bit beaten up).

Not much is published on feet outside of Allosaurus so reference material is hard to find.  This bone is not from one of the large theropods.

Some affinities to Tanycolagreus so thats one candidate.  Check out Digit II  Phalanx 1.  But having said that they are all petty similar.

  • 1 month later...

I continued working on this jacket recently and I extraced a rib and an partial ischium. Both pieces were beaten up quite a bit and needed a lot of crack fill.

I found a claw in the jacket that has been completely covered with matrix. What I nice and unexpected surprise.

It probably belongs to the camptosaurus as well. However, I am not a claw expert... Below please find some pictures. The length is about 5cm.
