Hi!

 

a beginner here, found what I think is a scute. Would love to narrow down what kind of creature it might be from. I found it in the hills west of Medicine Hat near the red deer river (the same formation as dinosaur provincial park, but outside the boundary).

I second softshell turtle, sometimes they look quite similar to crocodilian osteoderms but I've found that crocs tend to have larger & deeper pits. Additionally, the bottom view you gave us shows a piece of the rib which are fused to what we think of as the shell.
