NJ Cretaceous: Helping ID Jaw piece with partial teeth.?.

Recommended Posts

Found this bone chunk this weekend on a creek hunt in Monmouth County NJ, looks to be a piece if jaw with some partial teeth! I know bone can be very hard to ID but hoping some distinguishing marks and parts might help on this on.  Hole on one end and 3 partial teeth, with one half full root exposed. Let me know what you think! I can take additional pics if needed.

Happy Hunting!

Jawbone of something.  Maybe croc or fish???    :headscratch:

Looks like a tooth sticking out of the one hole.

I see 3 partial teeth now that I’m looking closely. Last pic shows entire root of half tooth down the bone.

I think as @Al Dente said it is Xiphactinus. That is the first jaw section of that species I've ever seen anyone find here.

Thank you for the help! I initially didn't even see the partial teeth and after looking through pics and some info I think Xiphactinus is also the closest I was able to come across as well.

I'm seeing Xiphactinus, too. The teeth are quire rare in the brooks. This, in my decades of experience, is completely unheard of. Well done! I would strongly encourage you to donate this to a museum.

Thank you for your input! I have found Xiphactinus teeth before but never like this one. This was actually a surface find after last weeks rain storm! One of my best finds from this stream that is not just a tooth!
