Plant Fossil?

Caroboneferous

Recommended Posts

Found this piece next to a deposit of Carboniferous fossils in Kansas City.

It was found next to a shale deposit that had plant fossils.   I’m just curious what it is?  Plant fossil? Something else?

I'm afraid this looks like mineral filled cracks that have weathered unevenly to some extent.

Yep agree with Rockwood...looks to be some type of limestone/carbonate with the mineral filled cracks...no plants, but could have some invertebrate bits in there....seem to have some very small rectangular and circular cross section bits.

Plant remains are usually/more likely found in non-carbonate type rocks like the shale you pointed out was nearby.

A general rule is that the environment which preserves plant material destroys shell and bone. As with most 'rules' there are exceptions, I'm sure.
