Osteoderm Identification

Recommended Posts

Inland Venice,FL. Pleistocene material. Removing matrix from specimen that I thought was Equus jaw.  Several confirmed teeth from this 2’ x 2’ square. During removal, I found this. Before I continue removing matrix, looking for identification of this osteoderm. I have also found (jet black) alligator jaw piece approximately 10’ feet away.  Thanks in advance. I am also looking for feedback on whether to continue removing matrix or display fossils in matrix.

I think (can not be sure) that your osteoderm is Giant Armadillo... like this one.IMG_1114.thumb.JPEG.b060bdce8d1306b81bc01102e14893d2.JPEG

The only armadillo piece I ever found was approx 10’ from this on the surface.  The trays I’m prepping are from a sugary sand that was stained with iron and a yellow substance.  I keep an open mind when prepping. I’m just surprised.

found another piece of osteoderm just below other piece.

thank you.

I'd wager softshell turtle carapace with that texture, although if it's an inch or more thick than it's definitely an osteoderm.

I agree.

Thank you everyone.  I also agree on the Trionyx pieces.  Right next to them was the tooth in the next pic.
