I received an offer for a Hadrosaur egg from Nanxiong formation.. and I am confused because the egg looks too perfect... and the crack of the egg looks unnatural to me.

Would you share your opinions?

You will surely receive responses by Sunday or Monday, after everyone returns from hunting.

In the meantime, post a few crisp, clear pictures of the texture from different sections.

Hi TeethCollector. I agree with Christine.Rowland sharper photos of the egg shell would be very helpful. Some of the shell looks like it’s been reattached?  Based on your photos it does not look like any of the eggs, attributed to Hadrosaurs, that I’ve seen but I’m not an expert. The colour seems a bit odd. My own opinion is to proceed with caution where this egg is concerned, and wait for the observations of experienced forum members. Be mindful of the fact that import/export laws exist on material coming from China!

This photo makes me think it's real, with possible repairs. As always, try to get sharper photos

This type of egg isn't too uncommon. No one can say if they are hadrosaur or not, but that's what they are commonly sold as even in China

Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!

Your egg does look real as others have said.  Looks like some of the shell material had been reattached.

You dont ID eggs to a species or family group but it does not look like what some might call hadrosaur.  The formation is noted for Oviraptorid eggs which this is not.

Thank you for let me know about the legal issue! Yes I do know that.. but I'm not importing or exporting this. This is from U.S. seller. I guess this is from an old collection.

And, thank you for comments! Thank you for everyone.

Some of the collections from the formation do contains eggs with round shape(The C2 egg in the photo), so I guess this is one of them…

Yang et al (2019) describes those C2 clutch eggs has Macroolithus and identifies them as Oviraptorids.  Not sure what size your eggs are but the yellow dashed line is 44mm, so small.  Yours looks a lot bigger

Then, this one may be a new type of egg from the place or the locality may be wrong. I see this type of egg with similar size from a newspaper and they say the egg is from Heyuan city.

By the way, I made the deal. I'll post detailed photos here once I receive this.

  • 2 weeks later...

The egg look genuine to me too.  As Andy said, it's not an uncommon type of egg from Nanxiong Formation.  It looks like this clutch that is from Heyuan.

Is Nanxiong Formation located in Heyuan?

I finally received the egg. The egg looks more realistic than showing in the seller's photo. Has clear evidence of shell texture and cracks. Really nice egg.
