South Austin, TX Bone?

Jackito

Recommended Posts

We found this bone in creek in south east Austin, Tx. It's a quaternary area, and the only other fossils we found were huge shells. This is a first bone my 9 yr old son and I found so we're super excited, and appreciate any help in figuring out what it is

Also, my sons bedtime routine now includes us opening the fossil forum and reading though people's trip summary's or looking at the cool things to identify. I appreciate all those folks that contribute their knowledge, time, and patience to us newbies!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on y'all's first bone fragment find!

I see that no one has commented, and that may be due to the condition of the bone.  Unfortunately since it looks like both ends of the bone are broken or incomplete, it can be very difficult or impossible to identify the type of bone.  Whatever it came from, it was a pretty big size!

If it were found where I am, around the Brazos River near Houston, I would be guessing a partial large mammal radius bone, but I'm still a novice compared to others here, so that would be a very big guess.

Good luck to you both in all your hunting from a fellow Texan.   :-)

Ah, great find. I think I know what creek you found that in, as I've spent dozens of hours walking among those big Exogyra in east Austin ;)

Like said above, it's unlikely that you'll get a specific, concrete ID on this fragment. But based on where you are, I think one of the leg bones from a bison could definitely be plausible. I've found bison teeth oh that creek before, and stumbled across an old bovid skeleton as well (which I didn't check, I'm still kicking myself ). That being said, it could also be cow, but there haven't been cows around there for a while, so it would still be old regardless.
