Just finished prepping out this Calamites, found a month ago. It was large and colorful, worthy of posting a picture. It came from Ambridge, Pennsylvania. This is mahoning shale/ Pennsylvanian. I will include a few of the other finds too.

Fern leaves of multiple species were easy to find. Not the best one found. More of a typical one at this site.

The iron present stains things, producing colorful patterns in the matrix and fossils.

Beautiful specimen, and good photography! You got a very clean fossil there. What sort of prepping did it require?

Nice find, is the site up there off the side of the 51 still productive? I visited last year and had some decent luck

@tombk, The shale from this location is fragile, so I left it in quite a bit of matrix to stabilize it on its way from Pennsylvania to Minnesota. In fact, 75% of the specimen was not exposed. The shale parted ways from the calamites with just razor blades and a little dremel usage. In fact, I had separated the specimen from the matrix completely and it looked great on the other side too. But I still love the contrast of the fossil against the shale, so I lightly glued it back. I then stabilized everything with some Paraloid B-72.

@Vae70It appears to be from my perspective!

So that whole thing is B-72 coated?

@cngodles, yes. Everything was coated with a very dilute mix so that it penetrates deep. This helps tremendously to prevent crumbling of the shale.
