Alex E
Hello all, Bit of advice needed related to a find from yesterday Geo location: Beltinge, Herne Bay, UK Site location: loose on foreshore, on matrix Age/formation: Eocene/Paleocene from either Upnor or Thanet formations most likely First thought was turtle shell, but realized at home it was way too thin? Only other ideas were a piece of gastropod shell. Any thoughts welcome.

Alex E
Right, here's two more shots with flash (one of the matrix) that might help
Plantguy
Interesting tidbit. Not sure what that is...Have you looked at it under any magnification? It kind of looks woody to me. Are there any black/possibly carbonaceous?/coal like areas around the edges...I cant tell from the image. Aside from the apparent banding/possible fine layering there appears to be some shrinkage? cracks? in the side view (is the surface very hard/soft?) and some really interesting textures that may or may not be created with my photoeditor when I magnified the area.... Alex E
Here's some more close-up shots. You are right there are definite cracks and coal-like areas around the edges. Not sure about the texture you mentioned but the banding seemed like the stranger thing to me. Are you thinking towards some sort of tree bark perhaps? I can see some sheen of what I think is pyritization as well when lighting it up. Unfortunately I don't own a stereoscope so I can't get significantly more magnification. Plantguy
Thanks for the additional photos! Yep, I'm gonna stick with my possible wood/bark fragment ID. The possible black carbon/coalified? remains and possible pyrite and banding are consistent with that kind of find. I like the fact that its still in matrix as well! Get yourself a small handlens/magnifier/loop as sometimes you can see some amazing smaller details/clues/microfossils with this and other rock/mineral/fossil examples. I want a scope too and havent gotten to use one in many many moons! Continued hunting success!! Thanks for showing us this guy!
