ID please... My guess is coral.

Hi, I'd be grateful for a ID on this fossil, found today at Worbarrow Bay on the Isle of Purbeck, UK.  I can't see anything similar online but my best guess would be coral.  Would be very grateful for any deeper insight!  IMG_20210821_230256.thumb.jpg.9d14c15fff4cd205bcb94ee801f5843c.jpg

Hello and a very warm welcome to TFF from Morocco. :)

I've been collecting on Purbeck a few times, back in the day, but not seen anything like this.

I would agree it looks like a coral.

Thank you so much!  This one will definitely make it into my natural treasure box.  Purbecks are lovely, hope to make it to Morocco one day!

Welcome to TFF (The Fossil Forum)! Your find is quite cool. It does look coral-ish, although it doesn't look exactly like anything I've seen before and I wasn't able to find any online matches either. From what I read, Worbarrow Bay has mostly Cretaceous rocks (from 145 to 66 million years ago). I live in the state of Iowa in the US, in an area where there are abundant corals, but they are all much older, mostly Devonian (~400 million years ago). Maybe a member who's more familiar with the Cretaceous period will have an opinion.

Please post clearer images from different angles, if possible. It's a little strange what you have there, but more photos are welcomed. :)

Hi there,

Thank you for your interest.  Here are some better photos of all angles.  The colour is more accurate in these photos compared to the first lot.

Very nice pictures. And very nice specimen. I am curious to see what somebody who is familiar with the fauna in the era and location you found it in has to say.
