lizindyk
I am looking for help identifying this fossil bone. I found it on the beach and was fascinated by the shape and look of it.

Jared C
Yep - one of the giveaways is how perfectly round it is - other verts have other growths, shapes, and textures coming off of them, and shark verts basically never do. The explanation I've heard for this is because the structures around shark vertebrae are cartilage rather than bone, so they don't fossilize - leaving just the beautifully circular boney disc. In other animals, the structures of and on the vert are bone, and therefore fossilize more easily. “Not only is the universe stranger than we think, it is stranger than we can think” -Werner Heisenberg
