Dinosaur skull?

Hi guys,

my dad found this and says it's a fossilized dinosaur head embedded in this rock, my family and friends are doubtful.

He found this a few days ago and had me convinced enough to dig it up.

I am unsure whether or not this is just a cool looking rock that happens to look like a dinosaur head, or if it is actually a fossilized head embedded in this rock.

Found in Munster Ireland, you can make out what seems to be a eye socket, mouth, and just has the general shape of what you would expect a dinosaur head look like on one side. The other side is all rock and on the bottom it looks like what could be the base of it's head (if it is what he says it is and not a rock)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

This is a lump of limestone, I believe.

The age of the rocks in your area will be Devonian to Carboniferous and thus many millions of years older than even the earliest dinosaur.

I admire your work in digging it out but its just a rock. The rocks of munster are too old for dinosaurs. Plenty of other fossils in places however.

  • Fossildude19 changed the title to Dinosaur skull?

Sorry, not a skull.

No bone morphology or texture.

Thanks for the replies guys, I posted elsewhere and got mixed responses but thought best to find a forum with people that at least have a interest in this kind of thing. I had one guy say that it could possibly be a fossil as the skull would have been replaced with rock keeping the shape, not too sure about that now.

Thanks anyway guys, as I am still kind of unsure but almost 99% sure it's just a rock I won't bother going through with the effort with moving it off the beach but instead will send the pictures and location to a museum or college that studies this sort of stuff and if they think it's worth any sort of time they can go and look.

Thanks guys, have a good week :)

Yeah, we have a little bit of an interest in the stuff, but we also have some serious knowledge and expertise here.  And I will also chime in with... not a skull.  See the reasons above.

The knowledge of members here is astronomical, though I am here to learn from their vast knowledge.

As for your rock, I would take it home and tell the kiddies, it is the dragon I slayed. But only if you can keep a straight face forever.

All kidding aside, when you have any doubts about a potentially significant find, the number one best thing you can do is contact a paleontologist at a local museum or university. Send the pictures along with the location.  So your plan is spot on. :i_am_so_happy:
