ESCONI Braceville Shaft Mine Trip 9-11-21

Nimravis

Recommended Posts

I am getting some fossils together to take to the ESCONI Braceville Shaft Mine trip that is running this Saturday and Sunday. The fossils that are collected there are Mazon Creek flora and fauna. When I am able to make one of these trips, I always pick up the car with several buckets full of fossils that we dump out and allow the participants to take home.

This time I’m bringing a bunch of Mazon Creek fossil’s, Ordovician fossils from St. Leon, Indiana, Mississippian fossils from Anna, Illinois, Pliocene / Pleistocene shells from Florida, some echinoids and shark teeth from Morocco, a couple small Meg teeth from South Carolina (?), cephalopods from Graf, Iowa, some Pennsylvanian fossils from Oglesby, Illinois  and maybe some other odds and ends that I do not recall.

Here are a couple quick pics as I was placing them in the car.

Wow, that is quite the bonanza!  Awesome!   I have several buckets for Saturday and Sunday... there will be quite a bit of open material for people this weekend.  A good day to unload...

Thanks and see you tomorrow!

Cheers,

Rich

Well here are pics from the trip today. There were approximately 50 participants, and the following Forum members; @stats, @connorp, @bigred97, @Rob Russell, @flipper559 and @Roby. If I forgot someone or added someone that was not there, my apologies.

It was a great time and a hot day.

I will start with a picture of yours truly-

It was a great day!  A little hot, but sunny with plenty of fossils for everyone.   Couple ids of forum members. Next time, we need to get a group shot.

Cheers,

Rich

@connorp having hopefully some good luck.  He brought some great specimens for show and tell around lunch time.   As @Nimravis mentioned, he's the reigning Invertebrate/Plant Fossil of the Month winner!

Yes- I brought a lot of intruders, including some polished rocks, 1” meg teeth and fossils from other time periods. It is a good way to spread the wealth and give people things that they might not be able to go and collect themselves.

Looks like a great day! I was sorry I couldn’t make it, this was the first year in a long while where I didn’t collect any Essex biota material from Mazon. I’ll have to make up for it next year. :fingerscrossed:

Ah OK ! Presented in this way I had the impression that someone had made believe that this agate came out of Esconi ! That’s why I called it a joke. I have to watch too many movies on television ! :heartylaugh:

I agree with you, when you meet people from another region, the best way to share a good time to the end is to offer some of our own regional finds. So the collections enrich each other and it’s always a pleasure.

@Nimravis Ralph thanks for posting this report and for your fossil contributions - lots of happy folks and kids bringing home a new treasure. It was great to see you!

@tombk I kept telling people that those spiders were real, like you said they all had 8 legs. You can't deny the science! :heartylaugh:

I had a great day collecting concretions and it was great to see so many of my fellow ESCONI members.  Chris

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Here's a pretty concretion I found there. I've seen the blue coloration before, but never this dramatic. Not sure what it is, some encrusting metal. Since it was found on 9/11, I do feel obligated to name it the "America Concretion" and not split it.

That stuff is very common over here in my area (Cretaceous shale or mudstone), particularly in areas that were geothermally affected. I've always wondered what it was... I thought maybe oil, but I guess it's hematite or some similar mineral.

Yes I would suspect that high heat may have formed it. I've only seen it in large spoil piles that likely had fires burning at some point.
