jikohr
Hi guys! This was found off the coast of North Carolina by a scuba diver, My first thought was huge weathered otolith but I'm not sure and would like a second opinion if it might be another bone or a rock. It's a little over 5 inches. Thanks!
Coco
Sorry, but I’ve never seen an otolith this size! An otolith is flat, your stone is in volume. If you’re talking about a bone in a whale’s ear, I don’t think that’s it, your object is not "round" and hollow enough : https://www.anticstore.com/os-d-oreille-interne-baleine-79879P I’ll call our specialist for advice @Boesse Coco ---------------------- OUTIL POUR MESURER VOS FOSSILES : ici Ma bibliothèque PDF 1 (Poissons et sélaciens récents & fossiles) : ici Ma bibliothèque PDF 2 (Animaux vivants - sans poissons ni sélaciens) : ici Mâchoires sélaciennes récentes : ici Hétérodontiques et sélaciens : ici Oeufs sélaciens récents : ici Otolithes de poissons récents ! ici Un Greg... It is roughly symmetrical, I also just googled whale brain and they are that elongated shape but I'm not sure it's big enough unless it's from a baby.
