Noah’s Trilobite Preps

Hi all! Thought I would start documenting my trilobite preps.

Here is #1, a Calymene breviceps from the Waldron shale, Indiana, and my first real prep.

This is about 15 hours using hand tools primarily and a dremel for clearing some of the original matrix. My fingertips are sore, but lots of fun was had! Very exciting to see this feller reemerge after 400,000,000 years! Now to track down some other unprepared trilobites…. Trickier part of the operation…

Good job! :)

I have also been spending many hours prepping Wenlock trilobites with pins in the last week and completely understand the finger pain. Ouch!2.png.e79c24a89857dd1c6a293ec2fb20d24c.png

Painful, but such a good way to center yourself at the end of a long day... Evening prepping has really become my zen time :trilo:. I think I may invest in some thimbles though because I am still getting feeling back in my pointer finger :dinothumb:

A few prepped greenops from my New York trip:

We have a few before shots: (the positive split in two on the prone Greenops:

And here’s after: I managed to free up the second genal spine on both. The prone critter was buried at an angle but was manageable after chisel work with a drill bit while holding my breath-

The arched Greenops was a little trickier, the right genal spine shattered out with the negative, so I managed to collect the pieces and glue it back in place. The left genal spine came off with another piece of slab while in transit, which actually made it easy to prep out more cleanly.

still all with hand tools for now, hopefully I can clean these up more once I have an air abrasive setup.

And finally a little puzzle that I’m glad turned out well: both eyes were stuck in the negative. I ended up fracturing through to dig them out, somehow in one piece, and got them reattached.
