Here is my latest trip to POC. Another nice large tooth (I took a picture with a cm ruler for the non-Americans out there), some mastodon or mammoth enamel, a few nice ptychodus, chunkasaurus, and several chunks of matrix with teeth sticking out of them. I also had a few questionables. Anyone know what kind of tooth is in pictures 5 and 6? Or 7 and 8? Im thinking 9,10, and 11? 12, 13, and 14 might be crushed crustacean or coprolite?

Great stuff!

Not looking for you to divulge any secrets, but was this all found at the usual location at Travis Street or do you have your own special spot.  I’ve been experimenting with other locations but your haul looks better than any of my recent experiments.  If that’s a typical Travis Street haul, I am thinking I should stop trying to reinvent the wheel and go back to Travis Street.

This was not at the Travis Street location however I do go there occasionally and have successful trips. If I do go to Travis Street I walk at least 3 or 4 gravel bars up to avoid the over picking. There are several other bridges that cross POC however the access is more difficult.

Yeah, that has always been the trick for me when scouting out a new spot:  can I even get down to the creek from there (and could I reasonably expect to climb back out with my pockets full of goodies, carrying a bucket, strainer and trowel, after a couple of hours of bending over and standing up every few minutes).  Most spots that look great on Google Earth do not make the cut on that basis.  Lol.

For picture number 3, the backside of the enamel will be helpful. I suspect you have both Mastodon and Mammoth though.

From what I understand, Mammoth enamel has a particularly textured backside, and the enamel has more straight lines on it.

I don't seem to notice much wrinkling on the enamel of the largest chunk, so If I had to guess, I'd assume that that large chunk at least is Mastodon.

For comparison, here are some Columbian mammoth enamel pieces from down here in Austin. They have straight-lined, wrinkley enamel, coupled with the particularly textured back sides.

Thank you very much. The larger piece of enamel I have looks very much like this so I guess it is Mammoth.
