Stephy0923
We found this while along the Missouri river in Bismarck North Dakota. The river is extremely low and we were aways out where the waters are normally deep.
Lorne Ledger
Bison medial phalanx?
Thomas.Dodson
I'd guess Bison rear proximal phalanx. It's not quite stout enough to be a medial phalanx. The preservation is typical of Bison bones from that area of North Dakota and the curvature of the distal 2/3rds of the lateral margin is suggestive of Bison over Bos.
Stephy0923
Is there any way to date this? My kids are very curious and I just don't have the knowledge. Thank you all very much Edited October 11, 2021 by Stephy0923 Spelling
Fossildude19
Is it mineralized? You can do a burn test to determine if it is a fossil or more recent. Hold a flame to a part of the bone. If it gives off a smell of burnt hair, it is likely recent. (Less than 10,000 years old.) If it doesn't burn or give off an odor, it is likely a fossil.
