Fossil texture

Normally, I am  pretty quick to recognize and toss bone fragments. An unusual texture stops the toss. Here are a couple of finds from last week.

Fossil #1

knowing how much you have seen and found I hesitate to voice my opinion, however #2 looks like a piece of walrus tusk to me due to what appears to be globular dentin in its central area.

If you reduce it to first impression the first photo screams ivory tusk to me. Any sign of Schregers in it ?

Agreed. guessing they've been worn/blurred. The textural features in Jack's piece are more pronounced than the actual piece of tusk I have. I''ve highlited a few similarities..I think mine is Pliocene/Miocene, Peace River FM. possibly Mammoth.

Nice finds Jack. Not sure what #2 is..maybe just bone? .Is it very heavy/dense?...maybe rule out dugong remains.

Thanks for your responses.!!! My gut tells me that both of these are tusks.  but I can not find a single Schreger line.  Only a few minutes to comment.  Going out in morning.  Will take along fossil #1 and ask my friend to polish one of the ends....

This is a location where I have found Rhino and Rynchotherium.   I compared the the 2nd fossil to a known Rynchotherium tusk,  but once again no schreger lines !!!

Chris, Nice photo, nice finds.  Do you detect Schreger lines???

Walrus Van horn ???  This would become my biggest chunk of Walrus if that is what it is..... 4:30 am coming fast.....  Thanks Jack

Hey Jack, just getting around to looking at old threads. So I can see why you would say tusk for both. I do see that "cone within cone" structure that is slightly weathered in the 2nd specimen but it also looked like there was a cancellous boney area in another view as well. Somewhere I thought I had a dugong fragment whose texture seems to be the same as yours but I cant find it at the moment so I'm more that out of my element so I'll leave it at that.

My specimen has some vague schraeger lines--not the best angle to show them here.....

Here's another view of another piece showing that cone within cone structure like yours--not as worn though.

Any chance you brought these to the club meeting and others gave their opinions?
