hpcc1234
. . . . . . . . . . . . Looks like some kind of Ammonite perhaps - found near to Filey (Hunmanby Gap/Reighton Sands). Question is, if it is a fossil, where do I WALLOP it with the hammer, please?
Lone Hunter
I thought only Texans said WOLLOP Looks like a concretion, could contain a fossil, not a wallop expert but I would choose position in photo 5.
TqB
Yes, it looks like an ammonite, quite likely a Dactylioceras from further north brought south by glaciers and/or onshore drift. I'd tap it cautiously at the right hand end of photo 5 maybe, but be aware that not all of these break cleanly. There's a tendency for specimens from some beds to pop easily, others not so. 1 3 Tarquin

hpcc1234
Quite a bit of stone chipped off, but so did (as predicted) some of the ammonite, I've glued it back on and left well alone. The centre looks very rough. No doubt someone more experienced than me could probably clean it up a lot better, but I am happy with what I have. For me the most important thing is knowing that I saw the pebble on the beach and recognised it for what it was. Somewhere on here I've posted a few more fossil pictures and I do have one very clean Ammonite Fossil that I feel very privileged to possess. 1
