New Discosauriscus

I know very little about vertebrate fossils, but to my eye a lot of this appears painted on account of how the "bone" areas seem to follow the lumpy-bumpy contours of the underlying rock, almost as though the bone were a thin film. Just my initial reaction; let's wait for our vert folks to weigh in. :)

I agree. This is an art project.

There may be some bones under the paint in places, but it is mostly a painted on/carved out "fossil".

You should really post here BEFORE you buy.  :(

I hope it wasn't expensive.

I have seen these often lately so hopefully everyone keeps an eye out. I think there are a few threads on similar species as well.   If I may ask though, what are you looking for specifically when inverting the colors? My assumption is if it all converts you are looking at how there is no variation in coloring indicating possible paint. Is that correct?  Thanks.

Yes. Exactly. It is not the best test, but it does sometimes make the differences show more visibly.

Sometimes when you do this, it will show differences in color gradients. This usually indicates what was painted.

This item presented is extremely uniform in color, indicating (to me) that it is paint.

Between that and the highly distinct bone separations in the skull indicate fake to me.

In looking for images of real ones, I saw many like this.

Great examples of real ones. Not really familiar with these fossils but when comparing with dinosaur material, what I always do is just do a quick google search to see what real examples may look like and compare against what I am buying. :)

As the "fossil preservation" of the piece in question looks quite different when compared against authentic pieces.

Found something about many of these being carbonised fossils...

such as these

As we do not permit seller links on the open boards, I took the liberty of removing it and replacing it with the reference image.

Update here is in short part of the sellers reply -

Of course as always a return and a return of your money will be issued upon safe return of the item.

In the future when your looking at a particular item and have any questions about it or want further information about the item please do not hesitate in contacting me BEFORE you purchase the item. I will be more than happy to discuss the item with you and if you have and answer any questions you have.

Have you performed a UV light test on the item in question? and studied the bones under a hand lens? This will show up any restoration or paint as this will fluoresce and under a hand lens you will be able to see the “brush strokes” if it were "painted”

These particular animals are carbonised rather than mineralised which means each bone has to have preservative added to the surface to stabilise the bones. This technique can come across to the uninitiated as “painted” .

But of course you the customer are not happy with it so the returns policy is in place.

Tim is this you pointing at me saying they are all fakes lol? :P

Well, they look different than the other real ones I posted earlier.

They look more like the one you have.

Infer what you will from that.

Like I have said - there may be some bones on these, underneath the paint, but who could tell?

The first one looks like it has the best possibilities of being somewhat real.
