Long time no Sea, but I found a skull(?) beachcombing yesterday (12/11/2021)

Well, possibly. My mom suggested it might be a coccyx of some kind, but I think the surviving eye socket is extremely suggestive.

Forgot to mention my usual, found it on a Suffolk beach in England, washed up by the North Sea.

Let me know if you'd like a different view. Also, is the part between the eyes what they call a fenestra?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or information!

  • Seaspawn changed the title to Long time no Sea, but I found a skull(?) beachcombing yesterday (12/11/2021)

I think this is a piece of neural arch from a mammal vertebra. The floor of the North Sea is known for Pleistocene fossils.

You should wait for more opinions though.

Thank you, Rockwood! If you're right, it's a very good thing I didn't put any money on it against my mom.

I had no idea about the Pleistocene specifically, I know it was where the Doggerland sank about 10K years ago, but that's nothing compared to the Ice Age!

Thanks again, I love learning about this stuff. :)

This is actually the base/back of a skull (occipital bone) where the atlas (first vertebra) attaches to the skull.  Your "eye socket" in the first picture is the foramen magnum.  Not sure what animal.

Something along this line:

This is from a deer, which looks a bit different from yours, but hopefully you get the idea.

Thank you ClearLake! I can absolutely see the resemblance now. (when will I learn to stop letting my imagination run away with me, LOL).

I'd like to mark that post as informative but i keep getting the pop-up "Sorry, there was a problem reacting to this content.". :shakehead:
