FF7_Yuffie
Hi, any thoughts on this, from Lyme Regis? It is sold as Plesiosaur, but does anyone know if that is accurrate or if it is ichthyosaur? Thanks
Tidgy's Dad
Looks ichthyosaur to me. The teeth are quite broad, straight and chunky compared to the much rarer plesiosaurs and on some of the teeth you can see the shiny tip which is typical of some of the ichthyosaurs found at Lyme. 1 Life's Good! pachy-pleuro-whatnot-odon
While the piece was definitely found at Black Ven in Lyme Regis and has the typical preservation for this location, it's an ichthyosaur jaw. You can tell from the second photograph, which shows the underside of the jaw at the point where the mandible join, as well as from the typically ichthyosaurian folds on the roots of the teeth, most clearly visible in the tooth circled in red below: 1 1 'There's nothing like millions of years of really frustrating trial and error to give a species moral fibre and, in some cases, backbone' -- Terry Pratchett
