Hello all,

I am considering buying this specimen but I know that fossil seahorses are often conflated with fossil pipe fish, which are more common and less valuable. Can anyone weigh in on the authenticity of this identification and whether or not the specimen appears to have been altered?

Thanks!

It compares well to images of others from that area. I'm thinking that it is genuine, but I have been wrong before, so wait for some others to chime in.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Can I ask what convinces you all when the dorsal fin is missing? Just unsure what you are seeing to discriminate. Thanks!

I don't know if this is valid but I go by a seahorse having a defined head, midsection, and tail.  I don't have a seahorse but I do have a pipefish and that has a defined head and then an elongated body in which you don't see where the tail begins.
