Kane
Thanks, Scott. It is much better that I know the truth, disappointing as it is. Thankfully, the price was not at a premium for the species, and I will be sure to say that it is altered. Caveat emptor, for sure. I was going to remove my post once you pointed this out, but perhaps it will be a good object lesson for others who visit this thread in the future: "All that glitters is not always gold - or even pyrite." ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer

If that is painted they did a fantastic job. I agree that it has been buffed to bring out the sheen. 27 minutes ago, Kane said: I will be sure to say that it is gold-painted or coated. Take a good look at it under magnification first. That should make it clear whether it is painted or not. Look for paint on the matrix or areas of the bug that they missed with paint. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." Look for paint on the matrix or areas of the bug that they missed with paint. I'm not sure that "buffed to bring out the sheen" captures it. If the fossil is actually pyritized there is nothing wrong (in my opinion) with "buffing" it to remove oxidation and bring out the unoxidized pyrite. However, "cleaning" a fossil with a brass wire brush will add a gold colored deposit of brass that is not there naturally. I once accidentally made some nice gold-looking Elrathia kingi this way. Of course the brass washes off with a little toothbrush action, as it is not integral to the fossil. Don
