screel0118
Found this in Alabama mountains near Huntsville. Was in a washed out area of rock. A professor at Ohio State did confirm its bone and possibly a vertebra. Any one have any insight as to what would have vertebrae this large? Fossildude19
Chert nodule. Note the conchoidal fracture in the center and on the edges. I'm not a bone guy, so don't take my word for it. But this doesn't look like the bone material we see on here on a regular basis. Wait for other opinions. @Harry Pristis 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Harry Pristis
Not bone, looks like a fine-grained rock. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest

MrR
It doesn't look like bone to me. What I find odd is the way it seems to be cut, as if it was sliced off of a cylinder. I mean, both sides rather flat like that? I can't help wondering if it was somebody's idea of most lucrative use of a chert nodule, or other such thing. But I am a low man on the expertise totem-pole around here, so take it with a crystal of halite. Cheers.
