Ontario Show Report

Yesterday I was at the second show of the year here in Ontario. I was held at the Paris Fairgrounds about 1/2 way between Toronto and London. Up here, there are much more mineral collectors than fossil collectors (I'm about 2 hours away from the mineral capital of Canada- Bancroft ON) but there was a nice mix of both at the show. Here are some pics:

1- Large Crinoid plate

2- Large Calcite specimen

3- Mammoth- upper jaw with teeth

4- Harpoceras ammonite from Germany (10-12" diameter)

5- a nice selection of fossil fish

More photos in the next post

7- A large specimen of Selenite crystals

8- Lotsa quartz

9- Assorted bones

10- A few skulls

11- Huge amethyst "cathedral" -this was probably 2 1/2 feet tall (and $3000)

Enjoy

Finally: the few pieces that came home with me

1- Ampyxina bellatula trilobite with several pyrite cubes

2- small slab with a Cladodus and a Deltodus shark tooth side by side

3- larger slab covered in trilobite pygidiums from Craigleith ON (likely Pseudogygites) The photo didn't come out all that great but there are probably 20 tails on it along with several shells

Wow, always great stuff at fossil shows! Glad you posted pics..

Those teeth from Illinois were a real surprise. I will have to check

Henderson County. I am from IL, and could hunt that area when

I visit if it is not too far..

One question if you know. Two of those skulls have no matrix.

I assume that someone cleaned out all the hard material from inside

the skull. Not used to seeing cleaned out skulls. Just curious...

Welcome to the forum!

Hey NorthernSharks,, All gem and mineral shows have more crystals and minerals than fossils, but its still super cool to go and see the shows. I, to my dying days will never understand the interest in crystals and minerals, but am super happy that it is that way. If everyone wanted fossils, then there would much more pressure on hunting and finding them, and all that would do is put more rules and regulations on them, not counting the so called politicians that would want to pass more laws trying to "save and preserve them"!!! Lets count our blessings!

Roz: My Edestus tooth is also from Illinois (Sparta)

As for the skulls, I had my 6 year old daughter pulling on my arm at the show so I couldn't spend as much time reading labels as I would have liked. A thought did occur to me though. If a skull were found in a river, it wouldn't be full of solid hard matrix would it? Another possibility is that those skulls weren't all that old, as I said, no time to read the labels. Whatever the case, they were still pretty cool to see
