Tidgy's Dad
Not barnacles. A fish mouthplate, perhaps? 4 1 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.

minnbuckeye
This is likely not a fossil but a mouth plate of a Sheepshead (Drum), common in the waters of Lake Erie. The local geology would not have fish like drum. The teeth have fallen out of your specimen. Plus, there is no wear and tear evident from a fossil tumbling in Erie's waters long term. It is still a keeper though!! Mike
digit
I'm guessing it would have been fresh water where this was found. The only drum with a pharyngeal plate like this is Aplodinotus grunniens. Take this as a lead to see if it occurs in your area. Wiki says it gets as far north as Hudson Bay so that sounds encouraging. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freshwater_drum (Likely modern, BTW.) Cheers. -Ken
