HemiHunter
A few weeks ago I found this bone fragment on the Potomac at a Paleocene site. It has a distinctive indentation which I thought might allow for an ID. An initial suggestion was a turtle bone, maybe a peripheral bone where a rib ending would attach. But I am open to any other ideas. I understand there may not be enough to go on. Thanks for looking! MartynH
Hi, I collect a lot of Palaeocene turtle material on the Isle of Wight and unfortunately your specimen does not have enough left to be sure of an ID. From the photos I am not sure that it is part of a turtle (carapace or plastron) it might be a fragment of bone from a croc or even a mammal. With these worn and damaged specimens it can be really difficult to give a positive ID from a photo so it is often better to take it to an appropriate museum as having the fossil in your hand makes any ID much easier. HemiHunter
Thanks Martyn! I kind of figured that might be the case but thought it worth a try. Paul
