andoran
I purchased this from a woman in Ontario, Canada with no other information as to what it may be. Does anyone have any ideas?
Shellseeker
Wow !!! Nice infrared photo... It looks like corals that I find in Florida... See this thread, http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/103017-a-piece-of-coral/ @MikeR has expertise in corals and lots of other things and may be able to identify 1 The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"
andoran
It's not infrared. It's just the image inverted in Photoshop. It sometimes makes it easier to see the pattern, especially on smooth stones. I tend to invert the first picture of every fossil just in case it helps. Thank you for the link.
oyo
It is very complicated with this type of material and without any data. Scleractinia without a doubt. Recent or not very old, at most Neogene. Probably family Faviidae, perhaps Solenastrea or Montastrea. Edited December 22, 2021 by oyo
andoran
Thank you. I really hope this was dead when they found it.

I agree with Oyo, not very old, perhaps recent. It is water worn so it was dead when collected. This type of material is common in Southeast Florida and the Caribbean. andoran
Whew! We have enough problems with coral dying off. I don't want anyone killing some because I wanted to have samples of coral for a presentation.
Northern Sharks
While it may have been purchased in/from Ontario, it doesn't mean that it comes from Ontario. I've never seen anything like that up here in fossil form and I'm pretty sure we don't have modern coral at all. FossilDAWG
Somebody from Ontario took a trip to Florida and brought back some modern coral from off the beach. Don
