The Grim Kupo
Hi all, I found this specimen while exploring the desert around Las Vegas. Does anyone know what I’m looking at?
Sagebrush Steve
Hard to say without knowing more about the geology of where it was found. One possibility could be oolite. The round shapes are ooids. Edited December 26, 2021 by Sagebrush Steve
FranzBernhard
I am seeing lots of septa and perhaps also dissepiments? - cross sections of rugosa corals? Franz Bernhard 1
The Grim Kupo
Thanks, Steve and Franz. The septa of rogusa corals seems to match. I’ll look into that possibility a bit more.
oyo
The presence of septa confirms coral but the presence of dissepiments does not rule out Scleractinia. Dissepiments, both in the endotheca and the exotheca, is common in Scleractinia. Also the presence of tabulae. The stratigraphy of the materials is necessary, as always
