Beema247
My friend found this fossil about 35 years. Can anyone identify what it could possibly be?
Mahnmut
Hi Beema 247 and welcome to the forum. This is an irregular (not round) echinoid (sea urchin). Somenone here may be able to tell you an exact species, but it may be hard without knowing where it was found. Beema247
Hey Mahnmut, Thanks, and yes, I’m sure he’ll appreciate the reply. Would be great if anyone could confirm a species then.
Fossildude19
A picture of the other side of it would be helpful in further identification. abyssunder
It's an echinoid, I agree. Was it found in the UK? The features are more prominent in person, as the camera shots are a bit snarge…
Beema247
Can anyone explain/define what an Echinoid actually is?
Beema247
He thinks if we crack it open, there may be a dinosaur egg or maybe a Big fat Diamond inside. Is this true?

There is not going to be a diamond inside or it being a dinosaur egg.
Plax
Echinoids like this one are called sea biscuits. Google "irregular echinoid". This is a steinkern of a sea urchin probably from the chalk. A steinkern is an internal cast of the shell.

Coco
Hi, The pictures taken from the underside of the sea urchin point me towards Echinocorys, without further precision. Coco So your saying my friends driveway probably came from: Echinocorys “Its remains have been found in Asia, Europe, Australia and North America.” I couldn’t find that possible with the economical climate even 50 years ago :-/ but what do I know?? Beema247
This looks the same right? Coco you maybe correct. Idk https://www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/data/echinoid-directory/taxa/specimen.jsp?id=1147
Plax
But your specimen represents sediment from inside the echinoid test. There's a pretty good explanation on the link I sent. Local rock for the drive of course.
Coco
Hi, Agree with @PlaxThe first pic is that of a well-preserved sea urchin whereas yours is only the internal mould. It’s kind of like comparing a naked human body with a skeleton... Sorry for the comparison !
