Three Lake Michigan Fossils

Kathi

Recommended Posts

Many fossils from Lake Michigan are Devonian, but some are later such as this snail fossil. My best guess on the round gray fossil is algae or diatoms. Can anybody confirm my guesses or have a better idea of species for the snail or segmented worm?

The second item looks like the edge of a rugose, or horn coral to me.

The third item may be bryozoans, or some type of tabulate coral, but I can't make out any detail.

The third one is possibly a bryozoan. Would need better and closer photos of the backside and edges all the way around (4 shots).

The first one looks like a fragment of a modern marine moon snail (family Naticidae).  Likely transported by people to Michigan (not native to Michigan and not fossil unless possibly Pliocene or Pleistocene from southeastern US)

Very interesting, thank you for the helpful suggestions, the second fossil has little details as the action of Lake Michigan has smoothed it out like sand paper. I will repost it with more contrast and include the reverse side, hopefully that will help. But the snail fossil is old enough to have turned to stone, limestone very possibly. Thank you all so much for your suggestions!
