PSchleis
Found on Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, January 2022 Doesn't look like any turtle shell I've found before. Pretty lacy pattern on the front. The back side of it is very symmetrical, as if whatever this thing was, this is the whole part of it (or at least it is worn down evenly to show it is the center of whatever the whole part of it was.) Very thin though it comes to a peak at the top, middle. Thanks for your help! Paula
Al Dente
This one looks like part of a searobin skull. 1

Definitely not searobin, but I agree it's probably a neurocranium piece from some type of fish.

abyssunder
Yes, why not? If I rotate your picture 180 degrees it may look like the upper part of the comparative specimen. 2 " We are not separate and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way. Well, I'm staring at about 60 searobin skull plates I've collected, of all sizes, over the past 15 years, and this plate doesn't look like any of them. In 15 years, I have never picked up a skull plate that looks like this.

Here are the searobin skulls I've collected for years. They don't even look like yours. Couldn't these be different fish? Or maybe they're just worn differently and I'm not seeing it. PSchleis
Here are the backsides of the searobin skull I posted in a comment above, and the picture of the original fossil. They just don't look alike at all to me. The original is rounded, comes to a tip with some stiping at the "nose" end (if that's what it is) The searobin skulls I've always collected have an elongated look with a couple of "stripe" type features on the underside. Fossildude19
The mistake you are making is thinking that the elongated things are the complete skull plate. They are not. They are the front part of the skull. I think your item is the back part of the skull - I've circled the item I think yours is. 1 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Thanks for being patient with me! I've never found the whole shebang like that before.
