croc scute

Hello again! I found this bone in the Boulonnais, North of France, late Jurrassic sediments.

I think it's a crocodile scute (like steneosaurus) but with some doubt because it looks a bit different.

It's also slightly curved and about 3 x 3 cm.

Hi Niels,

 

While I definitely see where your doubt comes from, this is certainly an osteoderm of a teleosauroid marine crocodile (see the images below). The unornamented part and curvature you mention are informative of how the osteoderms would've been stacked, as well as to where this particular specimen would've sat on the body in live, which, together with the pattern of ornamentation on the osteoderm, are likely diagnostic for specific teleosauroid genera, if not species. However, that goes beyond the scope of my knowledge and understanding. But have a look at Lepage et al. (2008) for comparisons and further inspiration.
